Bluetooth 5.4 Release Date

Bluetooth 5.4 Release Date

Recommended in 1 articles: Bluetooth 6.0 Rumors

Users are increasingly wondering what the release date of Bluetooth 5.4 will be. Let’s talk about whether we should expect a new version in the near future, and what can be updated and improved within it.

The Latest Bluetooth News and Rumors

Before talking about the release date of the new version, it is worth saying that in 2022 the Bluetooth SIG completed the development of the LE Audio specification. It is a new digital audio transmission standard that uses Bluetooth as its core technology. According to engineers, this will allow the creation of more energy-efficient headphones and portable speakers. At the same time, they will sound better and become much more functional.

Devices with support for the new Bluetooth LE Audio standard were supposed to appear back in 2020, but the release dates for the devices have shifted due to the pandemic.

The Release Date of Bluetooth 5.4

Let’s take a look at the release dates of previous versions to find out which one was the most recent and when we can expect the new Bluetooth 5.4.

We do not want to go far into the history of the development of all versions and will start with version 5. The 5.0 is considered a landmark and has received significantly improved performance and functionality compared to the previous version 4.2.

  • Bluetooth 5.0 – June 16, 2016. What’s improved: Transmission speed increased by 2 times (up to 2 Mbps) and power consumption decreased. Bluetooth range: 40 meters indoors and 200 meters outdoors.
  • Bluetooth 5.1 – January 21, 2019. What’s improved: Ability to track the location of connected devices. Bluetooth range: no change.
  • Bluetooth 5.2 – January 6, 2020. What’s improved: The level of optimization of Bluetooth performance has been greatly increased. The range has increased, and the latency between the sound and what is happening on the screen, on the contrary, has decreased.
  • Bluetooth 5.3 – July 13, 2021. What’s improved: New features that reduce latency and interference, and extend battery life and security. The support for the ANT + interface has also appeared, which is extremely important for people with some serious diseases that require constant monitoring of their condition with the help of devices. This applies, first of all, to heart monitors, glucometers, and finally, to heart rate monitors.

Now we know that the latest version 5.3 was released in 2021. To date, many flagships and sub-flagships of SoCs (systems on chips) of major smartphone chip manufacturers (Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung) have already received its support, and devices with Bluetooth 5.3 have gone on sale.

It is worth saying that there were no version updates in 2022, but as we said earlier, the Bluetooth SIG has completed the development of the LE Audio specification. And this means that upon completion, LE Audio will have to be integrated into the new version of Bluetooth. Therefore, we assume that the release date of Bluetooth 5.4 is 2023. It will probably be summer or winter. Looking again at the chronology of the dates of previous versions, you will see that this happened in June, July, or January.

Most likely to be improved:

Final Words

We do not expect significant improvements in Bluetooth 5.4.

In general, from the point of view of smartphone owners, nothing fundamentally new, unlike the previous version, will appear. Maybe, various “updates and improvements” to what was already in 5.3.

If you were planning to purchase a device with version 5.2 or 5.3, just get it and do not wait for version 5.4 to be released.

  1. hi there i only thought there was a 5.1 bluetooth for some time now but then i have seen the 5.2 but then where i live they are pretty slow around here anyways lol.. and now i guess they do have the 5.4 one just came out i think on march 8 2023 not to long ago but i have not seen any devices around here that have it 🙁

  2. What about fixing the bluetooth protocol on headsets where I can make a call and simultaneously hear high quality sound from my computer or phone? For that I need an analog connection because making that work in 2023 is apparently harder than building a nuclear power plant, putting a rover on mars or building a H-UV chipmaking machine. Ridiculous!
